Kansas Court Records

The Kansas Courts website offers public information about the Kansas Judicial Branch, record retrieval processes, and other details of the state's tiered court structure. It identifies the Kansas District Courts as the trial courts where most legal matters begin. As courts of general trial jurisdiction, the district courts handle all civil and criminal cases, including small claims, domestic relations (adoption, divorce, support), and probate. Above this tier are the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court, which act as the state's appellate courts.

The Kansas Open Records Act (KORA), K.S.A 45-216, promotes transparency by ensuring that public records are open for inspection by anyone who demonstrates interest. This includes records from public agencies and the judiciary. However, KORA also allows the judicial branch to make its own rules pertaining to case access. K.S.A 45-221 and certain rules of court specify categories of records that may be withheld to protect privacy and legal privileges.

This information portal helps users navigate the Kansas Judiciary and the legal processes for accessing public records. It is not an official source for legal decision-making.
