Johnson County sits within Kansas’s 10th Judicial District and is the most populous county in the state. Its sole trial court—the Johnson County District Court—operates out of the Johnson County Courthouse in Olathe and exercises general jurisdiction over criminal, civil, domestic relations, juvenile, probate, and small claims matters. In addition to the District Court, 19 municipal courts throughout the county handle local ordinance violations, traffic infractions, and minor criminal offenses in their respective cities. Whether you are verifying a civil judgment, researching a criminal case, or requesting a copy of a marriage license, knowing the right office and the correct procedure is essential to obtaining records efficiently.
Kansas court records can be accessed through a combination of official resources, including courthouse clerk offices, public access computer terminals located inside courthouses, and online search tools maintained by the state judiciary. The Kansas Judicial Branch has been transitioning district courts to a centralized case management system, and public records from participating courts are becoming available through an online portal. For statewide court information and access to publicly available case data, KansasCourts.us may help users locate the resources they need.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Johnson County?
Johnson County offers multiple methods for looking up court cases, with both online and in-person options available depending on the type of record and how much information you already have.
Online Case Search
The Johnson County District Court Public Records portal allows anyone to search for district court cases by name or case number. Additionally, the statewide Kansas District Court Public Access Portal (CaseSearch) provides case information for courts that have transitioned to the Kansas eCourt case management system. Johnson County completed its transition in November 2024, so records are available through this portal as well. A guide on how to use the public portal smart search is available from the Kansas Judicial Branch.
Access through the online portal is governed by Supreme Court Rule 22, which defines what case records can and cannot be viewed electronically. Some records that are public may only be accessible at the courthouse terminal rather than online.
