Wyandotte County is located in the northeastern corner of Kansas, encompassing Kansas City, Kansas, and operating under a unified government structure that merges county and city functions. The 29th Judicial District Court — commonly known as the Wyandotte County District Court — serves as the county’s general jurisdiction trial court. It presides over all criminal and civil matters, including family law disputes, probate administration, juvenile cases, traffic offenses, and small claims. The Clerk of the District Court is the official record keeper for the Wyandotte County court system. Sixteen district judges, along with hearing officers and supporting staff, manage caseloads across multiple departments housed at the Main Courthouse and the Juvenile Courthouse in downtown Kansas City.
For individuals looking to locate court case information in Kansas, records may be searched through courthouse public access terminals, clerk’s offices, and statewide online tools maintained by the judicial branch. KansasCourts.us can help users find publicly available court case information and navigate the state’s judicial resources. Wyandotte County’s district court has transitioned to the Kansas eCourt centralized case management system, making many of its records searchable through the state’s online portal in addition to in-person options at the courthouse.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Wyandotte County?
There are several ways to search for court records in Wyandotte County, depending on whether you need basic case information, specific documents, or certified copies.
Online Search via Kansas CaseSearch
The Kansas District Court Public Access Portal (CaseSearch) is the primary online tool for finding Wyandotte County court records. Users can search by case number, party name, business name, citation number, or other criteria. The portal displays case information such as filing dates, case types, party names, judge assignments, and hearing schedules. Court documents filed after the county transitioned to the eCourt system are also available for viewing online. A guide to using the portal’s Smart Search is available from the Kansas Judicial Branch.
Not all records appear on the portal. Under Kansas Supreme Court Rule 22, certain case types and document categories are excluded from online access but may still be viewable at the courthouse.
In-Person Search
Public access computer terminals are available on the mezzanine (M) floor of the Wyandotte County Courthouse for anyone to search court case information and view records. Staff at the various department offices can also assist with locating specific files.
Written Requests
To obtain copies of court documents, you must submit a written request. The Wyandotte County District Court provides a records request form that can be completed and submitted by mail, fax, or in person. Include the case number, party names, and the specific documents needed, along with your contact details and preferred delivery method.

Are Court Records Public in Wyandotte County?
Kansas follows a strong presumption of public access to government records. Under the Kansas Open Records Act (KORA), K.S.A. 45-215 et seq., members of the public have the right to inspect and obtain copies of public records maintained by state and local government bodies, including courts. The Clerk of the District Court serves as the records custodian for the Wyandotte County District Court and must make public records available upon request.
However, significant categories of court records are exempt from public disclosure. Under K.S.A. 45-221 and Supreme Court Rule 22, the following are not publicly accessible:
- Adoption records (K.S.A. 59-2111 et seq.)
- Care and treatment (mental illness commitment) records
- Child in need of care records
- Expunged criminal records
- Grand jury proceedings
- Juvenile offender case documents
- Protection from abuse case records
- Protection from stalking, sexual assault, or human trafficking records
- Presentence investigation reports
- Unexecuted arrest warrants, search warrants, and bench warrants
- Probable cause affidavits (except as permitted by statute)
- Poverty affidavits
- Coroner inquest proceedings
Additionally, under Rule 22(d), certain document types within otherwise public cases are excluded from the online portal but may be accessible at a courthouse terminal. These include dissolution of marriage documents, child custody and support filings, guardianship and conservatorship documents, parentage filings, marriage license documents (beyond the limited public record), juvenile offender filings, trial exhibits, and citations. A court order can also seal any record from public view.
If a records request is denied, the court will identify the legal authority for the denial. Requestors who believe a denial is improper may seek judicial review.
